MARCH 2005 The following Private Security Officers gave their lives in the line of duty during the past several months. We honor them today. Los Angeles, CA - Marcus McDonald was working uniformed security at a fast food restaurant when he heard two people yelling in the parking lot. Upon investigating, McDonald was shot in the chest by one of the men, who police say were arguing over drugs. McDonald was unarmed. Marcus was 20, and a full time college student. He leaves behind his mother, three brothers and a sister. The suspect has been arrested. Houston, TX - An unidentified man dressed in a security officer's uniform was found in a van that had been set on fire. The van which was totally involved in fire was parked at the Homewood Suites Hotel on San Houston Parkway. Police are investigating this as a possible homicide. Melbourne, FL - A campus officer was found dead at the Melbourne campus of the Florida Institute of Technology. Police and Sheriff officers are investigating the cause of death and as of press time, the officer's name has not been released. Springfield, IL - A private security officer working at the State House at the Illnois State Capitol was gunned down in September. Police say that the suspect opened fire at officer Woznick with a shotgun. Woznick was a 51 year old father of two. The suspect has been arrested. Dallas, TX - An unarmed security officer was killed in a shooting at an adult bookstore. Police said that the 65 year old officer confronted a robber, and was shot as the suspect fled the store. No arrests have been made. Indianapolis, IN - Officer James Davis of the Butler University campus police was fatally shot while questioning a suspicicious person on campus. Davis, 31, found the suspect loitering in a building where the Butler women's basketball team was practicing. Police later found the suspect and he was shot while tryiing to escape. The officer was shot in the head. MAY 2005 The past sixty days have been deadly for private officers. More than two dozen officers have been killed and numerous others injured in the line of duty. Below are those we have confirmed as of press time. Red Lake, MI - Officer Derrick Brun was working at the Red Lake High School as an unarmed security officer when a heavily armed 16 year old student Jeff Weise entered the school. Brun confronted the suspect allowing another security officer and numerous students to flee. The suspect shot Officer Brun and then went on a shooting spree killing 9 others. Tampa, FL - David A. Neel was enroute to his security post when he was shot and killed on Interstate 75. Police are unsure if this was a random shooting or if some one had targeted him. Police are still investigating this homicide. Akron, OH - Private patrol officer Michael Laughlin was working for Buckeye Security when he was dispatched to a burglar alarm at a Chevrolet dealership. Witnesses say Laughlin confronted a suspect on the property and a struggle ensued. Laughlin was beaten and then shot and killed possibly with his own weapon. A suspect has not been apprehended yet. Sacramento, CA - A security officer was shot and killed outside a popular night club. Police say that the officer was standing near the entrance to the club when a vehicle drove by and opened fire. Fourteen rounds were fired and the private officer died on the scene. No suspects have been captured. Ft. Lauderdale, FL - An unidentified security officer was stabbed to death during a fight in a hotel parking lot. Police are still searching for the suspect. Louisville, KY - A private officer was shot to death at a nightclub. Police say officer Michael L. Teasley, 32, was the head of security at the club and was shot multiple times. Police say officer Teasley removed the assailant from the club earlier in the evening. The suspect re- entered the club at closing time and shot Teasley. Warrants have been issued for the suspect. Broward, FL - Dan Mangu was working as a security officer at an apartment complex when he fired 13 shots into an apartment. The sheriff’s department responded and Mangu was killed during a stand off. Fayetteville, NC - Brian J. Wagoner, a former police chief left his job to work for a private security firm and took and assignment in Iraq. Wagoner was killed by a roadside bomb. Baton Rouge, LA - A private security officer who was working at a car dealership parked his vehicle on the road in front of the dealership with his emergency flashers on behind a car carrier who was delivering some new vehicles. Thirty three year old officer Kelvin Huff was struck from behind by a speeding Honda and was killed instantly. A suspect, Dustin Braul was later apprehended and charged with negligent homicide. Dallas, TX - A private security officer working at a nightclub shot and killed himself after accidentally shooting someone while trying to break up a fight. Police believe he was so upset about shooting a person in the leg that he went behind the club and killed himself. Jackson, TN - A private security officer for a hospital shot his estranged wife and then turned the gun on himself as police approached the scene. Tennessee State Troopers say that Curtis Wiggins, 44, a 25 year veteran with the Greenwood Leflore Hospital security department died of his self inflicted gunshot. His estranged wife, also employed at the hospital as a nurse was also pronounced dead at the scene. Iraq - During the months of March and April, nine private security officers have been killed in Iraq. Six officers were killed in April when their helicopter crashed after being hit by a missile. Bronx, NY - A Bronx security officer shot and wounded his live in girlfriend before fatally turning the gun on himself NYPD officers said. The officer, Jose Machado, 46, was employed as a security supervisor at Hunts Point Market in the Bronx and had a firearms license to carry his .40 caliber gun. |
