Private security has always been looked upon as the necessary evil to most who use the service or who benefit from it. Some
say it's a joke, a train wreck waiting to happen. And the truth is for the most part they are right.
Nationally security officers are under paid, under trained, grossly unappreciated and since September 11, 2001 expected to be
the front line of Homeland Security.
For those of us who have been around a while in this business ,we look back to a different time when the guard carried a
flashlight and a thermos of coffee and sat in a guard shack trying hard not to doze off. But today we are living in a much
different place and time that calls for professionally trained and equipped security personnel that are ready to do more than
wave someone through a gate or punch a watchman's clock. Today, security officers work in high profile, dangerous
assignments such as public housing projects, shopping malls, large school campuses and private complexes, gang and drug
infested neighborhoods and with that increased responsibility and public contact comes the dangers of being in a uniform and
wearing a badge.

Private security officers outnumber public law enforcement from all agencies combined, 2 to 1 and that number continues to
grow.
For the past nine years private security officers have also seen on the job injuries and deaths rise to record levels and those
numbers continue to skyrocket with more than 85 private officers killed each year.
We must therefore change our way of thinking about security officers and offer them the level of training, pay,respect and
appreciation that they deserve.
